ASSIST Social Events

Dzifa, Robyn, Sandra and Sonja, the Residence Life student staff team, are planning various social and cultural events to complement the learning you will be doing in the classroom during ASSIST. These events will help you form bonds with other ASSIST and UBC students, help you feel more at ease at UBC and Vancouver, help you learn how to manage your time and have a healthy lifestyle... the list goes on.

To give you a bit of a teaser, here are some of the social events we have planned for the first week of ASSIST: A gathering where you will all get to know each other. A trip to get your U-Cards and U-Passes. An info-session on how to get around Vancouver. A workshop on student services. Grocery shopping trips. A trip to open bank accounts. A walking, interactive tour of Vancouver! A visit to a festival. A beach picnic.

Since ASSIST lasts for two weeks, you can look forward to lots more! There also may or may not be a secret, surprise event planned.. stay tuned for clues and more information!

Summer!

I really like summer in Vancouver. One of the reasons I like it is because it reminds me of ASSIST last year, which was, for me, the perfect introduction to UBC and Canada. I loved those excitement-filled days and the joy of exploring a new, beautiful city, and meeting amazing people from all over the world.
Now that it is summer again and all my classes have ended, I have more time to wander around and discover some of the gems of this city - including the beaches. And speaking of beaches, as of two days ago, I have officially swam in the ocean! It was cold (as in, 16 degrees Celsius cold), but very refreshing. One thing I really like about Vancouver is that it doesn't get too hot in the summer - and you don't get the smog and haze that some other large cities have. It's a great feeling to be able to lie on the beach and look up at the clear, cloudless, brilliantly blue sky. And guess what - in just a little over a month, we will all be enjoying this delightful city together!

I realise that this post is desperately needing photos, but I unfortunately don't have my camera cable with me right now. I'll try to upload them next week. Stay tuned for pictures of beautiful Vancity!

Quotes from last year's ASSIST!

Here are some comments ASSIST 06 students gave about ASSIST:

"Feeling lost at UBC? ASSIST really helps." - Suwiman W., Thailand, Arts

"ASSIST gives one an opportunity to meet and get to know other international students on a more personal level. It is a great way to start a new life, in a new country, and a new school" - Naeem M., Tanzania, Engineering

"The best (only) way to start life at UBC." - Nasir Z., Malaysia, Engineering

"ASSIST is awesome!" - Jack L., China, Commerce

"I learned how to get by in Vancouver, where to shop, where the cinemas and theatres are and I even learned simple but essential things like how to take the bus." - Carolina A., Colombia, Arts/Science

"Start your new life with the right step - start with ASSIST" - Ryusei A., Brazil/Japan, Engineering

"ASSIST is the best way to begin studying at UBC" - Said P., Mexico, Arts

"The most awesome part of ASSIST is that it really helps you to know more people. Studying and socializing with the same cohort of people for 2 weeks really gives you a chance to know others more in depth, and not only just know their names. Some of my best friends now in UBC are from ASSIST" - Daniel L., Hong Kong, Arts
